The Christian and the Pagans

"It's a greedy world" said the life insurance salesman who showed up at my door. It was the first honest thing he had told me that day as he made his sales pitch. I politely refused, and as he left, he muttered something about watching my step so as not to slip on the ice that was outside.

He was right though, and he could thank the recent tax bill passed by the United States Congress. For the first time in human history, it is financially cheaper to be a corporation than to be a human being. Henceforth, A person's employer will pay less taxes on the money they "earn" than will they as an employee. And so in politically isolated America, the pendulum has for now firmly swung into the "greedy" category.

But why has this world become a greedy, harsh place to live in? It seems that for the righteous this is the final, most difficult test before they can enter heaven, while for the unrighteous, this is the final, easiest part of their swift, foolhardy descent into the abyss. And for those caught somewhere in between, it is a roller coaster ride of elation and sorrow that never really ends.

Speaking only for myself, it is not so much the nature of this world that makes it greedy, as it is the nature of the people who inhabit it, and in particular the ratio of good to bad. In my family alone I count myself as the only person who truly devotes themself to even trying to follow Christ's message. My other four family members, as well as most of their spouses and children, are privately unashamed nihilistic Pagans, who really believe in nothing other than personal material enrichment. And the fact that I represent the best my family has to offer this world is, to me, an extremely depressing thought.

So why is it this way? Well, perhaps because the righteous do not need an abundance of numbers. They are not cowards who require the help of peers to fight their battles, and needn't hunt in packs like wild animals. Nor must they limit their foes to one outnumbered, cornered and frightened adversary, for they can indeed hold their own even against the vast hordes of the damned. Perhaps that is why I've counted ten wicked for every one righteous: because the laws of this Universe allow it to be this way.

And yet even so, the time must invariably come when the wretched will command so great a number that they will threaten to wipe out each and every last righteous man, woman and child, as well as threaten to destroy even this very Earth itself. It is a frightful thing to contemplate, but one which has been foretold by virtually every prophet and seer who has ever lived.

When, Lord forbid, that day comes, you will read no more of these words. I will either be dead or dying, most likely at the hands of the non-believers who encompass me on every side. And as for this "greedy world" we live in, it will be seen as but a passing era of Man, which must first be put to rest before life can once more renew again.
