Why are the righteous held to such a high standard, while the wicked are allowed to misbehave seemingly at will? It is an ageless question that has come to haunt many upon this Earth, whether in the past, the present, or the future.
I will not pretend to have a definitive answer to this conundrum. But I will offer a fresh perspective that has gradually come to me over the years.
To begin with, imagine you are hiking in the woods, and that a lone wolf runs up to you, bites you, and then flees once it becomes clear you will not be an easy meal. How would you respond? Would you slowly limp back to civilization? Would you seek medical care? You probably would.
One thing you would likely not do, however, would be to give chase to the wolf, try to track it down, and exact vengeance upon it. What would be the point? Wild animals are incapable to being tamed, or of learning from their mistakes. You would be like Captain Ahab from "Moby Dick", a fool who took nature too personally to ever outlive the wounds it caused him.
Now, let's move on from that analogy, and ask instead a superficially similar yet substantively different question: what would you do if someone else's pet dog crept up behind you at a party, and just as savagely bit you, before running back to its owner?
My guess would be that the completely different context of the attack would hopefully motivate you to take much more meaningful action. For one thing, domesticated animals are held to a higher standard than wild animals are, and for good reason. They have several benefits that come with their entrusted status. For instance, they are more likely to be around young children, the elderly, and many others who is physically vulnerable. Secondly, they are far easier to track down and identify, and therefore easier to single out for punishment. And their tamed disposition makes them far easier to discipline.
So then, what would your response be? Would you take the owner to task for their derelict behavior? Would you seek some sort of punishment for their pet, if not a complete revocation of its privileges? And if not, then why not?
That to me is the difference between the good and the evil of this world. Some of us are wild and feral people, bound by no laws, whereas others of us have been tamed, and therefore have had more demanded of us. And heaven help those of us who are welcomed into the Divine Residence only to betray our gracious masters with the savage behavior we were expected to have left behind.
This is the best explanation that I can give for such moral discrepancies at this time.
