Eye of the Tiger

It's finally happened: the Democrats have lost again, managing to once more snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I've lost track of the number of thrashings we've taken, but quite honestly, who's really counting at this point?

The last time liberals suffered this many defeats in a row was in the opening years of the American Civil War, when the Union was losing one battle after another, with a revolving door of generals taking command, before losing entire armies and being surreptitiously replaced. We did eventually win, but not without taking almost twice the battlefield casualties of our enemies. And our victory was dependent entirely upon the insane calculations of our final commander, General Grant, who correctly surmised that a ruthless war of attrition was the only way to win, as it would eventually deprive our foes of the manpower necessary to wage war.

If someone wants an explanation for why our side keeps losing, I can easily provide one. It stems from the old adage: "For every thousand hacking at the branches, there is but one hacking at the roots". Imagine a football game. One team shows up with 50 cheerleaders and 50,000 fans who are howling in delight from the stands, but only ten actual players on the field. The other side has no fans, no cheerleaders, but shows up with a hundred well-trained teammates: linebackers, wide receivers, quarterbacks... you get the picture. Which team is going to have the upper hand? All the raucous noise and cheering would convince anyone who wasn't paying attention that the team with almost no players was leading. But in the end, ten times out of ten, they will have the tar beaten out of them.

That is the situation for liberals. For every hundred propagandists and armchair activists, there is but one who is down in the trenches fighting the good fight. And such a person often does not fight for long before being betrayed by the jealous demagogues who claim to support them. His or her every slight character imperfection is winnowed in the wind, and they are quickly denounced by their own team for one petty personality flaw or another. And so they quit, because no one wants to fight for coddled, self-righteous ninnies.

As a consequence, we end up being the team with no players on the field. On paper, we have everything going for us: we have the numbers, we have the financial strength, and we have the intellect. All that we lack is courage, and that has proven to be the most essential ingredient.

So we need more fighters; more battle-hardened warriors whom we have given a cause worth sacrificing for. And the stakes could not be any higher, for if we do not find them, we will lose all that we cherish: our way of life, our nation, and even our very existence.
