When it comes to preventing another Crowdstrike network outage fiasco, there are two very simple changes Microsoft can make to their operating systems.
The first is to automatically turn on their "System Restore" feature. It keeps track of changes to a computer's operating system, and backs up all settings before each program installation and update package. As I type this, System Restore is automatically disabled by default, and one must physically enable it to enjoy its many benefits.
The second change would be to allow a quick and easy way to reapply one of said restore points from the Blue Screen of Death. Instead of making a person boot to safe mode, access the System Restore utility, and manually restore the operating system, there needs to be a clearly accessible option to do so. It needn't be fancy; just a way to with a keystroke or two roll back the operating system to the latest restore point.
While these two simple changes will not prevent massive errors from hobbling millions of computers, it will allow a very easy way to recover from them that does not take hours of manpower and/or millions of dollars.
